On Monday afternoon, Mrs White runs a reading and writing group for our Most Able readers and writers in Key Stage 2. This club is by invitation only. You will receive a letter via your child's book bag if they have been invited to attend.
This half term, we have been reading Street Child by Berlie Doherty. We all enjoyed reading and learning about life for a poor child in Victorian Britain and were able to draw parallels between Jim Jarvis and the experience of some children in Britain today.
I was very impressed with the children's ability to empathise with Jim's predicament and the expression with which they read the text both in small groups and to the group as a whole.
We also expanded our learning to talk about Dr Barnado and the pivotal role he played both in the novel and in improving outcomes for vulnerable children during this period of history.
Our next project is to develop further as a community of writers. I have a very special surprise for the children when they return after Easter. I will keep you posted!
